Frequently Asked Questions

Who Can Enter the Competitions?

Our competitions are open to beginner writers aged 13+. To qualify, you must not have been previously published in a book or have won another writing competition at the time of entry. We trust entrants to be honest about their experience level.

What do we Classify as a 'Beginner'?

We define ‘beginner’ as someone who is still finding their voice, someone who writes for pleasure, learning, or practice, and has not had paid publication in books, magazines, or other professional outlets.

Who is Judging my Entry?

Entries are judged anonymously by our beginner judging panel. These are your average readers, people who could pick your book up at the bookshop and provide you with an audience. We focus on storytelling, creativity, and emotional impact — not just pretty prose. The judge’s decision is final.

We do not have celebrity judges, or judges that have been previously published. The purpose of these competitions is ‘for beginners, by beginners’. We provide feedback based on the average reader.

Do I Keep the Rights to my Story?

Yes — copyright remains with you. If you are a winner or runner-up, we will publish your work on our site with your permission.

What Happens to my Entry Fee?

Your entry fee helps cover website costs, prize money, and running the competition.

As we are beginner friendly, we do not ask for a lot and offer affordable entries for those wanting to get themselves published on our website and get their writing public in general.

The entry fee is £3.00
